"Without money there is no Love!" This was a statement made by the matriarch of a rural village in Thailand. This is what is being taught to the young girls growing up in that village and many others.
There is a Thai pop song that tells the story of a young girl who grew up marginalized in her village because she was poor. However the song goes on the explain that she returned to the village a hero after marrying an OLD wealthy foreign man.
When I ask my students what makes them happy EVERY TIME several of them will answer, "Money makes people happy."
One of my friends is a hopeless romantic and yet over the last two years I have seen her heart broken time and again. Now all she want is a rich man. Someone who will take care of her and her family. She no longer dreams of finding someone to love her and cherish her for who she is.
Many of my students were passionately in love as young girls. They had a child or two with a young man who promised to love and take care of them. And then those promises were forgotten! Dreams of true love were left destroyed.
Many girls in Thailand and the surrounding countries grow up with this message being conveyed to them sometimes subtly and sometimes more overt. It is an message that encourages young women to leave home and drives them into the sex trade. They have been trained to believe that...
MONEY is more important than LOVE
MONEY is more important than your HAPPINESS
MONEY is more important than your SAFETY
MONEY is more important than your HEALTH
MONEY is more important than your LIFE
It is heartbreaking for me to witness.
I have experienced deep sacrificial love from family as well as friends.
I know the unconditional love of my Creator.
That is what motivates me. I want the women to experience TRUE LOVE!
"Love is patient, and kind; love does not envy of boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoings, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. LOVE NEVER ENDS!" I Corinthians 13:4-8a
